Harbour Community Rules & Parking

Last month we highlighted the Neighborhood Watch program. This month we begin reviewing Association Rules important to all owners. And few things are more important than parking.

Of course, our CCRs assume all garages are used for parking. CCR 7.4 says “Required garage space may not be converted into any use (e.g., such as a recreational room or storage) that would prevent its use as a parking space. The Association may establish rules and regulations from time to time for the parking of vehicles in parking spaces in the common areas.”

Like many homeowners’ associations it is assumed that cars are parked in your:

1) Garage; 2) Driveway, and last on the 3) Street. Your garage should be used for cars and not storage.
If you have guests or renters and the garage is full (of cars) the next parking area is your driveway. The last area of parking refuge is the street.

Our Association Rules’ have more to say about parking and vehicle restrictions:

  • No trailer, detached camper mobile home, commercial vehicle, truck (or other than standard size pickup truck or standard size van), boat, inoperable automobile or similar equipment shall be permitted to remain upon any lot, other than on a temporary basis, unless it is parked within an enclosed garage. CCR 7.3
  • Campers, trailers or motor homes cannot be used as living quarters within Bodega Harbour. See CCR 7.1
  • Recreational vehicles may be parked on a homeowner’s lot subject to these restrictions:
    • No overnight occupancy of recreational vehicles;
    • Not more that 96 total hours on the property owner’s lot in any one calendar month;
    • Not more than four “stays” on the property owner lot in one calendar month;
    • No stay will be more than 48 hours in duration;
    • There will be a minimum of 24 hours between any two stays. (CC&R 7.4)

Our streets are public so we must look to the county rules when asking how long we can park on the street. The county parking ordinance says:

  • Vehicles must be moved after 72 hours. After 72 hours your vehicle is subject to being towed.
  • Parking is prohibited in an intersection, crosswalk, within 15 feet of a fire station driveway or fire hydrant, or in front of a public or private driveway
  • No parking on the roadway side of a parked vehicle, in the center of a median strip, or in any way that obstructs a roadway.
  • On narrow streets, no parking within 6 feet of the street’s center. This impacts boat or RV parking on the Harbour narrower streets. Vehicle blockage of these streets compromises emergency vehicles who may need to enter the narrow streets.
  • Call the CHP is you have issues with street parking that are not covered by our CC&Rs.

The bottom line: while we love our trucks and boats and RVs, they cannot be on the street or on our lots for longer than allowed as described above.

Let us all enjoy the beautiful Sonoma coast together!

Neighborhood Watch Update

The BHHA is pleased to announce the establishment of a kick off meeting for the communities Neighborhood Watch program:

January 19, 2022 – 4 pm – Blue Water Bistro
This will be a zoom meeting only due to current covid concerns

The Board established a work group to address public safety in the Harbour and ultimately conducted a survey of the membership (See Survey Results on BHHA website). An overwhelming response was received and clear majority opinion was that public safety and crime prevention should be a priority for the community. In addition to finalizing our contract with private security services and adding camara surveillance to common areas, the Board directed the workgroup to contact the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office to explore proven crime prevention programs. The Sheriff’s office was very responsive and recommended the community implement a voluntary Neighborhood Watch program.

The meeting will include Deputy Sheriff Jason Pasero, the first responder to the Harbour and Community Service Officers Karen Hancock and Nicole Demetrak. Also included will be a supervisory representative from our private security company, Allied Universal. The following topics will be discussed:

  • Discuss current crime logs so residents are aware of current issues in the community
  • Go over crime prevention tips for our homes
  • What to watch for and how to report crime to dispatch
  • How to work together in your neighborhood watch group such as having block leaders
  • Discuss sharing contact information to contact a homeowner should the need arise
  • Go over evacuation information and provide tags in the event of ordered evacuations.
  • Q &A time with Sheriff’s Office staff & private security representatives

This increased communication with residents through the Neighborhood Watch Program and the staff who provide public safety services to our community has proven to reduce crime and enhance safety in other neighborhoods. It is also a great opportunity to meet and thank the staff who provide these critical services to our community, including the outstanding services we receive from our private security team.

Please note, when booking a tee time, you will more than likely be paired with someone else. In order to maximize rounds and revenue, please remember to cancel tee time(s) or reduce players within the 24-hour cancellation period to avoid being charged.

9-Hole Play: Options for 9-hole play are the BACK 9 in the mornings from 7:30 – 8:30 am, and available during twilight time on the FRONT 9. LITERATURE GROUP

On January 10, our first book of 2022 is The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennet. Marily Lerner will be our first 2022 presenter.

The Vanishing Half “is a multi-generational family saga that tackles issues of racial identity and bigotry and conveys the corrosive effects of secrecy and dissembling.”

The novel spans nearly half a century and focuses on twin sisters, Desiree and Stella Vignes. At 16 the twins run away together, but after a year, their lives split.

Bennet narrates her novel through the voices of Desiree and Stella and their daughters, “one blue black dark, one blonde, one smart and grounded, the other spoiled and lost.”

“Her characters are forever calculating what’s lost and what’s gained at each turn, what vanishes and what remains.”
(NPR Review by HELLER MCALPIN)

The Literature Group meetings are held the first Monday of each month. (If the date has a holiday conflict, the meetings are typically moved to the following Monday. Meetings are being held on ZOOM at 3:30. A ZOOM link will be sent out to the group prior to each meeting.

After too long a hiatus due to the Pandemic, we are ready to start the New Year with an active Sea Gals group. For those of you new to Bodega Harbour the Sea Gals is a non-political organization founded in 1978 by the early homeowners in Bodega Harbour as a social and philanthropic endeavor. We have minimal dues of $25 per year and try to meet monthly for a luncheon. To begin 2022 the Planning Committee has chosen a venue to include partners and guests. We will have a luncheon on Friday, January 21st to be held in Occidental at the Union Hotel at noon. The menu will be salad, minestrone soup, bruschetta, pasta and cookies. The cost will be $30.00. We do ask that those who attend be fully vaccinated! Reservations can be made via email or phone to Lorraine at This email address is being protected from spambots. Winter Gardening
Happy New Years from the Landscaping Committee

Taking a drive through Bodega Harbour in December & January you’ll see Cypress Trees bending by the wind, the perennial Calla Lilly bulbs are coming up for you to enjoy the fresh green leaves, with the expectation of white flowers blooming in April. If you’re lucky you’ll see the Rhododendrons flowering during winter for those beautiful & delicate flowers, that withstand our winds & rain.

The best part of this season, we don’t need to water, and hopefully you’ve been planting drought tolerant flora & fauna.

Here are some ideas for coming January.

  1. For those of you on automatic water sprinklers, now is the time to turn them off during our current rainy season.
  2. If you have birdbaths, continue to clean them with fresh water, preferably daily.
  3. Now is the best time to trim your trees, as they are dormant during this time of year. Then come March & April they’ll show more & healthier growth than they did before.
    With proper planning for Winter Pruning, you’ll be pruning during dormancy, avoiding Spring Nests, as well as maintaining HOA Guidelines.
  4. The E. Candida, known locally as the Pride of Madera attract bees, hummingbirds & butterflies. Full sun, good drainage, with little or no water. This can be invasive in coastal wild lands. Thus, the Pride of Madera is not on the approved list of New Landscaping Plans. We understand that we’ll find them throughout Common Area, Open Space, & fellow neighbors. Enjoy the beautiful purple spikes, but they are short lived. We ask that once leggy & basically dead, that those be removed annually.
  5. Never too late to mulch & cover irrigation systems.
  6. While trimming trees & bushes, save some of the cuttings & branches & enjoy some dramatic interior floral arrangements.
  7. If you have pets in your home, always check what might be a danger to your pet. The Poinsettia for example, is such a holiday favorite, but can be a danger to our four legged family members.
  8. By now you have pruned your hydrangeas, and left the new growth for blooms for next year. Trimmed & shaped your lavender leaving the green & silver leaves. Possibly can still cut back your Rosemary, and make a Winter Wreath of Rosemary & Herbs. Enjoy herbs at the coast, Rosemary, Lavender, Lemon Verbena, Sage, Thyme & more. They grow annually & are available year round for the home cook & baker.

May your garden be filled with greens & color, & your home be filled with wintery arrangements of greens, forced narcissus bulbs, & dramatic reds of the Amaryllis.
