Bluewater Bistro

We are excited to officially announce that we have opened up your Bluewater Bistro Lounge and Bar for dine-in on Fridays and Saturdays from 12p-8p until further notice. Due to staffing inadequacies, we are only able to provide indoor dining during these two days for now. We hope to have a larger pool of talent to hire from soon and will reopen more days of the week as we go along. Reservations are not available at this time but you are welcome to call and check on table availability. Our restaurant line is 707-875-3513.

We appreciate the support that you have provided over the last 15 months while we have been closed to indoor service. It means a lot to us and has helped us retain some of our best staff. As we re-open, we ask for your patience and understanding in the fact that we are still a skeleton crew. Although there will be a period of adjustment, we look forward to having our homeowners back in to enjoy our beautiful facility. Once again, thank you for your patience as we transition back to indoor dining and please don't forget that our patio dining, and our delivery/take out services will continue as normal.

BHHA BOARD OF DIRECTORS SEEKING VOLUNTEER CANDIDATES FOR THE NEW STARTEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEE YEAR 2021-2

BBHA’s last Strategic Plan was approved by the Board of Directors in 2004. A multi-year effort by a large committee included input from an extensive survey of all Members of the community, including their approval of a Vision Statement. Your new Board of Directors will be reviewing the Charter for the Strategic Planning Committee at its July 17 meeting. We are looking for volunteers who would be interested in serving on this Committee. Please send a letter of interest to the Board of Directors c/o Mary Angelo to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or drop it at the Administration office by July 10, stating you interest and relevant experience. The committee is expected to be highly active this year. Strategic Planning, sometimes called Long Range Planning, is a systematic process that will help us look beyond the immediate, set goals with priorities for the next 3-5 years and keep track of our progress. As the Mad Hatter said to Alice, in Alice in Wonderland:

“…if you do not know where you are going, any road will take you there.”

Free Evacuation Tags
Coming Soon

The Sheriff’s Office is giving away evacuation tags to residents living in unincorporated Sonoma County and our contract cities, Sonoma and Windsor. Evacuation tags are a new tool to help us more quickly ensure that neighborhoods are evacuated during a disaster. Residents tie the tag in a highly visible location when they evacuate.

This saves time because first responders don’t have to tie their own ribbon on the property and they can immediately check the next home. We’ve learned that seconds can count during evacuations and we are excited to bring this new time-saving tool to our residents.

An order for tags has been placed with the Sheriff's office specifically for the community. As soon as the tags arrive, a email notification will be sent out.

Also, residents can pick up a tag at any of the stations or during one of the drive-through distribution days next month. All the details are here: sonomasheriff.org/evac.

Benefits of Seasonal Tree Trimming

Many of us in the Harbour have Cypress Trees, among other trees & large bushes. Our trees have reached the age that they will gladly climb high into the air and branch out as far as we will let them. Some of us have unfortunately let our trees exceed the height limitations set forth in the CC & R’s. The height limitations are enforced to prevent view obstructions of the natural features of our beautiful setting. If your trees are the culprits of view obstructions for neighboring properties, the BHHOA is tasked with informing you and setting in motion a timely process to enforce this rule, regardless of the season.

If you have trees in your yard, keeping them regularly pruned on a voluntary schedule can help ensure they're healthy, aesthetically pleasing, and in compliance with view requirements.

The Best Time to Trim

Without a doubt, winter is the best time to trim your tree branches, especially if you want a tree to flourish in spring. Trees are dormant during this time of year, and when they do come to life in March and April, they'll show more and healthier growth than they did before. Another advantage of waiting until winter is that some trees have no foliage, so you can get a better look at the branches.

The Worst Time to Trim

Some people opt to trim their trees during the fall in an attempt to get a head start on the next year, but this is actually the worst time to trim your tree branches. After you trim, your tree wants to put out new growth, but if you do it just before winter, it can weaken the plant because it's also ready to go dormant.

Spring and Summer Trimming

While winter is the best time and fall is the worst time, you may be wondering about spring and summer. It's actually acceptable to trim trees during both seasons. However, if the tree is one that flowers in early spring, wait until it's finished blooming. If you want to correct or slow the growth of certain branches on a tree, you can prune them in summer after they've completed their new growth. Also, be aware that your trees may have nesting migratory birds.

Trimming and Rain

Whatever season you choose to trim your trees in, never do it right after it rains. Wait until the tree and general area around it are dry, and preferably, do it on a sunny day. This helps prevent the spread of disease and bacteria that can kill your trees and other plants.

With attention to the benefits of seasonal pruning, you’ll be pruning during dormancy, avoiding Spring Nests, as well as complying with BHHOA CC&R’s.

In addition to being cost effective, mulch is also good for the soil.

Since soils are the foundation of vulnerable root systems, having healthy soil is the best defense against poor environmental conditions such as drought, hot dry winds, and sudden changes in the environment. Adding mulch is the easiest and least expensive way to combat these plant stressors and help protect root systems.

Mulch acts as a porous membrane which easily absorbs water, while simultaneously reducing evaporation from the soil. In fact, adding 3” to 6” inches of an organic based product can reduce watering needs by over 25%. Not only does mulch keep the plant material hydrated, it makes plants and trees less prone to damage in the event of a fire. Other benefits of mulch include reduced weed control, a pleasing appearance, and a nice natural smell.

Mulch will also help reduce erosion and water runoff. Once a tree or an area of landscape is mulched, water that is added will stay in place much better and is less likely to evaporate.

The Huhns spent 25 years in Jenner before moving to Bodega Bay in 2001.

Laura stated her initial concept:

“I imagined semi-wild gardens, the plantings chosen with the intention of being pollinator friendly for bees, birds and butterflies, but able to survive the deer and the wind. Among the rocks, are groupings of succulents, as well as yarrow, salvia, sweet pea, nasturtiums, Mexican sage, rosemary, lavender and thyme. Tall ornamental grasses, small palms and flax add movement to the garden and work as a privacy screen near the borders. We have merged different vertical and mounding plantings on one side border with a neighbor-- which expands the visual field and is a delight to both of us.“

Working in the garden is meditative, but also a form of play—even more so during this last pandemic year.

We’ve recycled and incorporated parts of an older garden within the newer one. Old oak barrel staves were saved and reused to make the hanging orbs in the trees. “

Thank you Laura, for sharing you whimsical garden with us… and congratulations!

Our two Honorable Mentions go to and Tom and Denise Perak at 395 Sanderling:

Each of these winners will receive a cash gift in the amount of $150.00!

Denise commented that her yard spruce up was in response to a notice from BHHA landscape requesting that they address some yard maintenance issues a few years ago. She called Yard Pro in Sebastopol and is extremely pleased with the decision to have them create a low maintenance, beautiful corner lot landscape that is water-wise.

Rob and Ann, who have been in North Harbour for 35 years, shared that their landscape was originally peppered with Eucalyptus trees and, once removed, they soon enjoyed concepting an “all season” color scape. Their labor of love is completely created and maintained by themselves. Rob noted that they are currently working to expand their sedum groundcover, which blooms with white flowers in late summer.

Congrats to all of our award winning gardeners!

Literature Club

July, 2021
Contributor: Cindy Borisoff

Coming Attractions:

On July 12, Marily Lerner will present Year of Wonders: A Novel of the Plague by Geraldine Brooks.

Brooks, a former foreign correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, has written two well-received books of nonfiction.

Year of Wonders is her first work of fiction….it is narrated by Anna Firth, who works in the household of the rector in a 17th century English village ravaged by the plague….based on historical fact…in 1665 villagers in the Derbyshire town of Eyam voted to quarantine themselves…the disaster, naturally, comes from the plague…but also from the quarantine which transforms this community into an isolated microcosm of society in extremis.” (New York Times Book Review by John Vernon)

“Brooks unflinchingly describes the barbaric 17th century customs…Anna’s existential questions about the role of religion and ethical behavior in a world governed by nature…Brooks keeps her readers glued through starkly dramatic episodes and a haunting story of flawed, despairing human beings.” (Publishers Weekly)

The Literature Group meetings are held the first Monday of each month. (If the date has a holiday conflict, the meetings are typically moved to the following Monday.) At this time our meetings are ZOOM meetings that begin at 4pm. Group members will receive an invitation to the Zoom prior to the meeting date.

If you have any questions about the Literature Group, please contact Maurine Harkness (This email address is being protected from spambots.
