BODEGA HARBOUR HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION

This is the fourth in a series of articles on various aspects of the Community Rules, approved in 2019, which are available online at www.bhha.org under “Documents”. We encourage all owners to visit the site.

Bodega Harbour Security Survey
Neighborhood Watch

The BHHA Board authorized a work group to address Security Services in the Harbour. As part of that effort a security survey was conducted and received 353 individual responses. The results of the survey will be included in the member section of the BHHA website. It is abundantly clear through the survey responses that Security and public safety is a paramount priority for the community.

At the October Board meeting action was taken to re-bid the expiring contract for Bodega Harbour security services; reaffirm the cameras located at our entrances and expand cameras to strategic areas in the community common areas such as the club house, Bistro, and maintenance shed; and to establish a Neighborhood Watch program.

The Security Work Group, in preparing the survey and ultimately the Board action, contacted and received a presentation from the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office regarding strategies to deter crime and enhance public safety. The Sheriff’s Community Resource Officers recommended a Neighborhood Watch program as a proven method to educate the community, enhance communication with residents and our first responders, better coordinate and supplement our private security efforts and deter crime in our community. While criminal behavior in our community is very low, enhanced communication with our law enforcement first responders and education of residents to identify suspicious behavior and work together is a smart and low-cost method to enhance security in our community.

The completely volunteer Neighborhood Watch program includes some visible signage of the community’s participation in the program and one or two community meetings annually. During these meetings residents are invited to presentations on crime statistics in the county and Harbour, identifying and reporting suspicious behavior, meet the Deputy Sheriff and Community Resource Officers assigned to our area, and most importantly, provides a forum to answer questions regarding security in our community. For example, one effort the Sheriff’s office has undertaken in the County is to identify, voluntarily, those residents who have their own security camera systems. This allows the Sheriff ‘s office to more effectively contact residents when a crime has been committed in a specific location.

Additional information about the Neighborhood Watch program can be found on the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office website: sonomasheriff.org.

The Security Work group will publish a meeting notice and agenda when the Neighborhood Watch meeting is scheduled. Please contact BHHA Director Scott Kernan at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you have any questions or comments.

Bluewater Bistro

Check out our new menu offerings at the BLUEWATER BISTRO website!

BLUEWATER BISTRO HAS A NEW MENU!

We are excited to launch into a new culinary direction with our newest menu. With our new pizza oven(s) we are going Italian! But, we are keeping some of the items that have been very successful staples for us like Clam Chowder, Fish and Chips, Fish Tacos, & Hamburger.

Some items you must try are:

Our handmade crust pizza! Great reviews so far.
Garlic Roasted Wild Gulf Shrimp will be a new favorite.
The meatballs in the Spaghetti are to die for!
The salads are so good and healthier overall.

With less items overall on the menu, expect more specials.
Please follow us on either Facebook or Instagram to get updates as we go along.

The Bar is open 12-8 on Fridays and Saturdays. We are hoping to see more of you joining us for inside dining. Hiring new staff is still challenging but we are seeing slightly more candidates now than we were a couple of months ago. We really want to open all five days upstairs in the Lounge and we are close. Please continue to support your restaurant by ordering take out or delivery. We are here and waiting for those phones to ring. The staff that we've hired recently we are genuinely excited for you to meet and get to know.

Thank you so much for your support!

LITERATURE GROUP

November 2021
Contributor: Cindy Borisoff

It is “based on the life of Louise Erdich’s grandfather who worked as a night watchman and carried the fight against Native dispossession from rural North Dakota all the way to Washington DC…this powerful novel explores themes of love and death with lightness and gravity and unfolds with elegant prose, sly humor, and depth of feeling of a master craftsman.” (Barnes and Noble Review)

“The current and ongoing nightmare of missing and murdered Native women lurks in the shadows of the book.”

“The trend here, however, is toward redemption. Hard-won survival. And, in the face of suffering and struggle and governmental malfeasance, hope.”

“In this era of modern termination assailing us, the book feels like a call to arms. A call to humanity. A banquet for us prepared by hungry people. Erdich ends the book, in the afterword’s closing, with a kind of blessing: ’If you should be of the conviction that we are powerless to change…let this book give you heart.’”

“One description of a quilt might serve as an extended meditation on the book’s themes and on writing itself…’It had been made from a trade wool blanket and to a blanket it had returned…Here were the boys’ padded laid wool jackets, ripped and worn. These jackets had surged through fields, down icy hills, wrestled with dogs…Here was Rose’s coat from the early days of their marriage, blue-gray and thin now, but still bearing the fateful shape of her as she walked away from him, then stopped, turned and smiled…daring him to love her.’ A history embodied, and every bit of it endangered by Termination.” (NY Times Review by Luis Alberto Urrea)

The Literature Group meetings are held the first Monday of each month. (If the date has a holiday conflict, the meetings are typically moved to the following Monday.) At this time our meetings are ZOOM meetings that begin at 4pm. Group members will receive an invitation to the Zoom prior to the meeting date.

If you have any questions about the Literature Group, please contact Maurine Harkness (This email address is being protected from spambots. Helpful Hints

Here in Bodega Harbour we have minimum standards for our landscaping. Our standards include consideration for our neighbors to maintain the beautiful ocean and golf course views, as well as; regular maintenance to insure healthy plants, mulching to prevent weeds, and trimming to keep our sidewalks and street gutters clear.

  1. “Trees must be regularly maintained and trimmed to the roof lines of the residence. Vegetation trimming or removal is required even if a complaint has not been made in the past, regardless of the age of the vegetation. “ Don’t wait to find you have a new neighbor that might complain that your tree is blocking their view. Trim your trees annually or semi-annually, depending on the need, so they stay healthy. Trimming for the first time after 20 years or more, to get below a roof line might kill the tree.
  2. “Trees, shrubs, & plants must be trimmed so that no portion grows over the lot lines, the sidewalk, or where sidewalks do not exist, including; over the edge of the curb into the street.” Just make sure you’re trimming your garden, so our neighbors can walk safely.
  3. Echium Candicans (Pride of Madeira) is a part of our community. They grow wild throughout, and can be quite beautiful when blooming. We ask that all the dead Pride of Madeira be removed. Regular maintenance is required. This plant is prohibited as part of new landscaping plans.
  4. Mulch…use natural color mulch. The goal is for colors to integrate with the natural surroundings. Mulch can reduce weeds, retain moisture, and camouflage hose lines.
  5. Drip Systems, when developing new landscaping, consider the drip. Water sprinklers are approved, but aren’t the most practical in our windy coastal community.
  6. Soft Landscaping, for new landscaping plans we’ll want to see the samples of mulch, stone, gravel. Our goal is to have the landscaping blend.
  7. New to Bodega Harbour and building, or just thinking of a new landscaping plan. Driving around the subdivision is a great way to get familiar with plants that are approved & do well on the coast.
  8. If you do wish to make a complaint regarding a view obstruction, please contact the Bodega Harbour HOA Office & request a form for completion. Once the form is completed it will be submitted to the landscaping committee for follow up.
  9. Have fun in your garden. Time to get the bulbs in, remember the gophers love the bulbs. Try containers, and look around at your neighbors. If you see Gladiolas, Irises, & Daffodils doing well, might work for you too!
  10. Let us know if you would like to submit your garden for the next Fall Quarterly Garden Beautiful contest. It’s always fun to see our neighbor’s creative garden designs.

Free Evacuation Tags
Coming Soon

The Sheriff’s Office is giving away evacuation tags to residents living in unincorporated Sonoma County and our contract cities, Sonoma and Windsor. Evacuation tags are a new tool to help us more quickly ensure that neighborhoods are evacuated during a disaster. Residents tie the tag in a highly visible location when they evacuate.

This saves time because first responders don’t have to tie their own ribbon on the property and they can immediately check the next home. We’ve learned that seconds can count during evacuations and we are excited to bring this new time-saving tool to our residents.

An order for tags has been placed with the Sheriff's office specifically for the community. As soon as the tags arrive, a email notification will be sent out.

Also, residents can pick up a tag at any of the stations or during one of the drive-through distribution days next month. All the details are here: sonomasheriff.org/evac.
