Golf News

Hello members, we hope you’re doing well and enjoying our beautiful fall weather in Bodega Harbour! Please see below for some important announcements for golf operations in November.

AERATION: The greens aeration was completed by Jonathan Ivory and his crew October 24-25th with medium tines. All went well and they’re on their way to healing. With a little help from the weather, they should return back to ‘firm and fast’ before long!

MEMORIAL GOLF FUNDRAISER (11/4/22): Golf Fundraiser will be held Friday, November 4th at 3:00 pm. This is a 9-hole scramble event to be followed by awards and auction to benefit CERES. Stay tuned as we’ll recap the results of this fundraiser next month!

BALLOON SALE: Our annual balloon sale will be held Friday, December 9th from approximately 4-7 pm. Feel free wear your favorite holiday garb, then stop by to enjoy hosted appetizers and beverages!

We’ll also have balloons for those of you who wish to do some holiday shopping. For those of you not yet familiar, you select all of your merchandise, bring it up to the counter, then pick your balloon. Our golf shop staff will pop the balloon to reveal the coupon inside, which will range from 20% - 50% off, and one lucky shopper can select the balloon with the FREE coupon!

MEN’S CLUB NEWS: The Club Championship & Senior Net Championships are now complete; results are below.

The 36-hole Club Championship Match (black tees) was held between Dr. Chris Finkemeier and defending champ, Frank Gonnella. Although Dr. Finkemeier played well, he was up against Frank, playing his best golf of the year, when it mattered most. Congratulations to Frank Gonnella for his excellent play and to Dr. Chis Finkemeier for 2nd Place!. Frank is no stranger to the winner’s circle as Club Champion and feel we’ll likely see Chris battle his way back soon for another worthy finals match!

The Senior Net Championship (white tees) was a match between close friends, Greg Thokle and Kurt Diebel. Greg & Kurt played a grueling match that was tied after regulation and went two extra holes to determine the winner. Congratulations to Greg for fending off Kurt on a classic battle, and to Kurt for finishing runner-up!

Men’s Club Awards Luncheon: TBD

WOMEN’S CLUB NEWS: Ace of Aces Tournament was held October 4th and the winners are as follows:

Gross Flight: Monica Nowak, score of 90 Net Flight: Jane Vail, score of 75

Congrats to Monica & Jane!

The Warm-Up Center is open from 7:00am to 4:00pm each day. We have a total of six hitting stations at our warm-up center (three per side). This schedule allows our staff enough time to pick up the balls, tidy up, and get everything ready for the next morning’s play.

GOLF LESSONS: Whether you’re brand new to golf, returning, or need help with a certain area of your game, stop by to ask about our lesson options. We offer individual lesson, series or clinics. We look forward to helping you with your game!

BOOKING TEE TIMES: Members who wish to make tee times for themselves or guests should continue to book at least 7 to 10 days in advance (up to 60 days max), to help secure your preferred tee times. LITERATURE GROUP

This Month:

On November 7,
Anne Kirsch shares Ray Bradbury's
Fahrenheit 451

On November 7th, Anne Kirsch will lead a discussion of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451.

“Written in the 1950’s not long after the Nazi’s burned books and, eventually human beings…America is living under a cloud of fear created by McCarthyism…these anxieties are present in the novel.”

“Bradbury’s key inspiration was the invasion of television…warning us about the threat of mass media to reading, about the bombardment of digital sensations that could substitute for critical thinking.”

“Bradbury feared memory loss…the more we erode language, the more we erode thought, and then the easier we are to control.”

“Bradbury believed we voted for political and economic systems to keep us happy rather than informed. We chose to give up our privacy and freedom to tech companies…How could they stop …hacking into thousands of years of humanity’s collective history and culture and then rewriting it or hitting delete.”

(Ramin Bahrani, The New York Times Essay Note: Bahrani made the Fahrenheit 451 film adaptation in 2018)

HELP KEEP BODEGA BAY LOOKING GREAT!

A small and dedicated group of folk have regularly cleaned up the stretch of Hwy 1 south-east of old town for many years.

You may have seen the "Adopt A Highway" signs showing "Bodega Harbour Sea Gals" as responsible for a 2-mile stretch of the highway.

We now need a few more folk for this important work. The work is cleaning up a small part of the 2 mile stretch, typically takes about an hour and a half for a 2-person team. and happens at most 6 times a year.

Of course not everyone can be available on any given date, so it is not expected that every volunteer will be available for each event.

Cleanups are done on a quiet weekday when traffic is light. All equipment is supplied by Caltrans. Safety is the highest priority.

No need at all to be a Sea Gals member. The cleanup group has evolved to be independent of the Sea Gals group.

Doing the cleanup can be a fun outing, and it gives you a new perspective on Bodega Bay. Passing folk generally appreciate that this work is being done.

If you have any questions or would like to join this community-minded group contact:

Gym Reservations

For convenience and ease, reservations for using the gym can now be made online, at BHHA.org. Please note that the reservation system has been recently modified with board approval—those changes have been highlighted below in green.

To make a new reservation – log in to BHHA.org, then hover over the Amenities link on the top menu, which will then display a sub-menu called Reservations. Alternatively, you can click on Amenities, and then scroll down to where it says Work Out Facility – that text is linked to the Reservations page. If you are logged in to the website, you can also click the link below this article.

After you get to the Reservations page, click on the Check Availability button. You will then see an availability calendar where you can choose a (30) minute time slot to use the gym. Only available time slots will be shown, within 72 hours (3 days) of the current time. The gym is open 7 days a week from 6:00am to 7:00pm.

After three o’clock, the gym will be open to all members without reservations.

After you’ve chosen a time slot & clicked Next, you will see a form for your contact information, most of which may be automatically filled in from your login profile. You will also be asked for your Member ID / Parcel Number.

When you’ve finished booking your time slot, you will receive a confirmation e-mail and the Administration staff will also be notified. If you need to make any changes to your reservation after it’s been booked, click on your Name on the very top left of any page when you are logged in, which will bring up a small menu and you can navigate to My Bookings.

While you can make a reservation at any time of day, and on weekends, the Administration office hours are Monday through Friday 8:30am to 5:00pm. If you need additional support, contact Janelle Vanderpool during the office hours, at

415-300-5974 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. She will be monitoring the reservations made online and reviewing the calendar.

After the application has been reviewed you will be requested to submit a refundable security deposit depending on the project category, and a Performance Agreement. Winter: Time for Tree Pruning

As we enter into Winter, time to plan for tree trimming. Many birds will have migrated and trees will become dormant. We in the Harbour have some beautiful trees that have been lovingly maintained.

If you do trim your tree during winter, when dormant, it is very likely that it will show more and healthier growth than it did before. As a general rule, you’ll want to wait until the middle or latter part of winter, or until the worst of the cold has come and gone.

Tree trimming can be fun, and almost remind us of a large Bonsai.

The Worst Time to Trim

Some people opt to trim their trees during the Fall in an attempt to get a head start on the next year, but this is actually the worst time to trim your tree branches. After you trim, your tree wants to put out new growth, but if you do it just before winter, it can weaken the plant because it’s also ready to go dormant.

Spring and Summer Trimming

While Winter is the best time and Fall is the worst time, you may be wondering about Spring and Summer. It’s actually acceptable to trim trees during both seasons. If you missed the Winter deadline, you can still get away with trimming in early Spring. However, if the tree is one that flowers in early Spring, wait until it’s finished blooming. If you want to correct or slow the growth of certain branches on a tree, you can prune them in Summer after they’ve completed their new growth. For wildlife, this can be the worst time to trim, with nesting migratory birds.

Trimming and Rain

Whatever season you choose to trim your trees in, never do it right after it rains. Wait until the tree and general area around it are dry, and preferably, do it on a sunny day. This helps prevent the spread of disease and bacteria that can kill you trees and other plants.

With proper planning for winter pruning, you’ll be pruning during dormancy, avoiding spring nests, as well as maintaining HOA Guidelines. Plan your pruning and enjoy your garden and wildlife.

Winter Beautiful Garden Contest…time to submit your gardens to enter our Semi-Annual Garden Beautiful Contest.

Enter your garden by providing your name, address, contact information and garden photos. A member of the Landscape Committee can come and take photos if you like. Please enter by Monday, December 8, 2022. Contestants will be voted on at the December 12, 2022 landscaping meeting.

$300 goes to the First Prize Winner, $150 to Second and Third Prize Winners. Let’s celebrate our local landscaping.

Rapid Member Survey Results

The Board of Directors approved the option of having two tennis courts in the upper court space and four pickleball courts in the lower court space. This work is planned to be done this coming Spring.

Reminder, per Ordinance 11-20.100 vehicles must be moved on county maintained public streets after 72 hours. The streets in Bodega Harbour are county maintained and therefore fall under County Ordinances. Your vehicle is subject to tow if it isn’t removed/moved after 72 hours.
